Solid Mechanics Track in Engineering Mechanics
The Solid Mechanics track is one of three tracks within the Master's program in Engineering Mechanics. These three tracks are Solid Mechanics, Sound and vibration, and Fluid Mechanics. The students taking the track in Solid Mechanics have their own premises and computer lab.

Our goal is to provide you with knowledge in all the technical aspects of Solid Mechanics analyses, which are in high demand in many industries. Your future occupation can include working with computational stress analysis, design, development, research or testing.
Solid Mechanics as a discipline encompasses mathematics, numerical analysis, mechanics and physics. It also involves a number of aspects from materials science and industrial design.
Solid Mechanics is a mature area which is still being continuously developed and researched both nationally and internationally. The driving force in this work is the development of new materials and their utilization for advanced product capabilities, improved durability and reliability, minimizing the adverse environmental impact. At KTH, we devote a lot of efforts towards developing tools to facilitate the design of new products through better description of material mechanical properties and formulating appropriate design criteria. We actively develop and use scientific computational tools which are widely adopted by the industry for Solid Mechanics and interdisciplinary analyses.
The objective of the track in Solid Mechanics is to educate engineers with professional skills in Solid Mechanics modeling and analysis who are capable of addressing the most challenging tasks, both nationally and internationally.
Engineers graduating with the major in Solid Mechanics are currently in high demand in a broad spectrum of industries. The list of industries is truly impressive and you can find our former students in aerospace, automotive, railway, ship-building, engineering, forestry, pulp and paper, plastic , metal , medical technology and electronic companies. Employment possibilities also include research institutes, universities and consulting companies.
The analytical skills which our students possess are valued in many application areas not directly associated with Solid Mechanics. It is important to mention, however, that over 95 % of all graduates from our department work with Solid Mechanics after university. This basically means two things; 1) there is a sufficient number of jobs in the field, and 2) those who study in our track find the subject interesting enough to devote the professional career to it! Although the job market is subjected to variations, the demand on stress analysts is constantly growing.

We encourage and help with studying abroad. Ideally, this should not be done during the first semester in the first year of the track as our mandatory courses are given during this period.
